Keep it Simple
We have many complicated things in our lives, so why over complicate our landscapes? This backyard patio shows how inviting a simple and uncluttered design can be. The stone patio is a modest size with clean edges and the retaining walls are made from rocks likely gathered from the local woods. The color scheme is simple and calming and blends well with the natural surroundings. This design borrows scenery from the tall trees at its edges and allows people to sit and enjoy a breath of fresh air. Not every landscape needs a fire feature, grill or pool, sometimes just the beauty of the outdoors is enough.

Create an Urban Courtyard
In downtown Boston, outdoor space is a precious commodity. This project in the city’s South End takes advantage of a once unused space by turning it into an urban courtyard. To enclose the space, walls were erected using steel-frames and whitewashed fir boards. This creates privacy and makes you forget you’re in the middle of a city. Antique cobblestones with moss growing in the joints provide a unique paving surface, while a large piece of granite rises up to support a glass table top in the center of the courtyard. Plants furniture and décor finish off the soothing design.

Enjoy the Luxury of Space in the Suburbs
Those that live in the suburbs of Boston have more land to work with. Here is a backyard that has enough space for a dining area, lounging space and a fire feature. A stone fire pit, meant to mimic a rustic campfire is the centerpiece of the design. A custom fence painted dark green, along with a row of white birch, provides privacy from the neighbors. The upper dining area is located near the home’s kitchen for easy access and just beyond the lounge space is a large custom-built spa. The paving consists of large gray stones with intersecting bands of cobblestone.

Combine Formal & Informal Details
Paying attention to the details can make a huge difference in a garden. This little planting space was given a lot of attention. An armillary sphere rises up out of the center, while tidy hedges create sectioned planting areas around it. The center area has been filled with lavender bushes and the outer corners with a plant that has silvery-gray foliage. Most people think that a garden needs to be either formal or casual, but this design shows that you can blend the two if well thought out. The hedges and armillary sphere add formality and the filler plants add informality. Sometimes breaking the rules can create wonderful results.
