Watch this professional designer discuss the choices behind this round fire pit and seat wall.
A video transcript featuring Scott Cohen, The Green Scene
One great way to maximize the use of space in a backyard is to create a go-to destination in the far corner of the yard. That's what we did here with this conversation pit.
This is a built-in seat wall with a backrest and a fire pit that's a nice size, big enough to put platters and things on. This takes advantage of the view from this lot. They've got a magnificent view of the mountains and valley beyond.
Materials used
I built this out of cinderblock. We stuccoed the face, and we used a flagstone cap on it. We cast these back walls out of concrete, and they're set 18 inches high, which happens to be average size for cushions, so that they could order outdoor cushions to match their patio furniture if they wanted to have the added comfort in the backyard. Great place to kick back, get away from the kids, have a frosty beverage.
