Contemporary Pool Deck Design
See how to use travertine pavers to update an old concrete pool deck.
A video transcript featuring Ive Haugeland, Shades of Green Landscape Architecture
I've got an existing pool here, and it has rounded edges and stuff that we wanted to minimize as much as we could in order to make it more contemporary. We did a pool coping of travertine, and we did a square around the outer edges, and then we just had to round it on the inner edges to make it fit the bed of the existing pool.
The travertine paving you see here is a key feature of the backyard pool deck. The existing pool deck was cracking and heaving, so it was removed and replaced with a larger pool deck with more seating areas and seat walls at about 18 inches tall all around the deck. The travertine pattern has all different sizes, both rectangles and squares, ranging from 8 inches up to 24 inches. This type of paving is a good choice around a pool deck because it's slip-resistant. We also used it because it can make the place look a little bit more contemporary. Bold stripes of lawn and paving make the gradual transition between the new patios and existing lawns. These stripes vary in width and are mirrored on the other side of the pool.
