This backyard in Sammamish, a suburb to the east of Seattle, was designed with the whole family in mind. The homeowners requested separate spaces geared towards adults and teenagers. The space near the home serves as an adult area, while a fire pit far out in the yard is designated for the owners’ teens and their friends. Designing outdoor spaces in the Northwest often requires a great deal of planning for wet weather. This yard has a covered outdoor kitchen area that can be used rain or shine.

Seattle is an area rich in natural beauty and resources. Here, a single large Lummi Island basalt stone was chosen to create a custom fire feature. Lummi Island basalt comes from the San Juan Islands off of the Washington coast north of Seattle, and is prized for its dark coloring with veins of white quartz. This stone was drilled, hollowed out and plumbed with natural gas to create a clean-burning and convenient fire pit. It also serves as a coffee table and centerpiece for the outdoor living space.

Many homes in Seattle have wonderful large trees on the property. This one had many old, mature conifers which influenced the planting design. With shade cast over nearly all of the gardening space, plants had to be selected carefully. The plant palette for this project focused on understory species, which are those plants found naturally beneath forests around the world. Many are locally native forest plants or newer varieties of natives that make better candidates for gardens. This project also included a walkway made of broken concrete fragments. The gaps between the pieces of concrete were planted with bright green Scotch moss that maintains itself during Seattle’s rainy season.

The Emerald City gets plenty of rainfall each year. Installing permeable paving reduces runoff and pollution by allowing rainwater to reenter the soil. Here flagstone was dry laid with gravel and plants in the joints. Permeable paving is often used for patios and driveways because these are the largest paved areas and will allow the most water to pass through. This type of paving still provides usable space, but is much more eco-friendly. It also offers an eclectic look that many Seattleites enjoy. Other permeable paving options include grass pavers, pervious concrete, decomposed granite and more.

For hundreds of years the Japanese have been creating gardens that serve as places for retreat and restoration. The owner of this home in the Madison Park neighborhood of Seattle wanted to recreate the same atmosphere in his garden. Originally, the property was lacking privacy and did not fulfill the family’s desire for outdoor living space. A black privacy fence, granite patio, multiple water features, and numerous Asian-inspired plants and trees were used to transform the garden.
