CREATE A PEACEFUL COURTYARDThis peaceful courtyard offers patients living in the Cancer Center’s Merriner Cottages at Carson Tahoe Hospital an ideal escape for spiritual healing. At the center of the courtyard is a unique sculptural water feature made of large pieces of stone. Colored concrete provides a durable path that’s easy to traverse, while granite benches offer resting spots for patients and visitors. The plantings were selected to be low-maintenance and require little water. The landscaping at Carson Tahoe Hospital was installed by Signature Landscapes.

BEAUTIFY & CONSERVE WATEREach year, the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) recognizes those who have made landscape improvements in an effort to be more responsible about their water usage. Because of its beauty and efficiency, this property received first place in the 2010 Water-Efficient Landscape Awards. The front yard features a paver walkway and steps leading to a courtyard enclosed by a low wall. Locally sourced boulders are integrated into the hardscaping to connect the landscape to its surroundings. Generously sized planting beds filled with ornamental grasses and shrubs reduce the amount of lawn and require little water or care. TMWA offers many resources on their website for getting started on your own water-efficient landscape.

Add Contemporary ArtworkThe Knowledge Center at the University of Nevada, Reno features a sculpture garden that showcases four unique works. If you don’t have a green thumb, outdoor art can add interest to your garden that is impossible to kill. While you may not install sculptures as large as those seen at the Knowledge Center, you can find many smaller scale pieces that will work in a residential setting. Because these sculptures are displayed in a public setting, they are surrounded mainly by hardscaping. You could take a similar approach at home or you could opt for displaying the sculptures amongst plantings.

Install a Focal Point FountainSometimes a large, flat lawn can be a bit boring. At Bowers Mansion, part way between Reno and Carson City, a fountain was installed in the center of the lawn. In this case, the fountain has a formal style and was aligned along the symmetrical axis of the home. However, if your property is more casual you can change this up by placing the fountain elsewhere in your yard. Furthermore there are many fountain styles to choose from, including modern, Asian and tiered designs. This fountain has an open water reservoir, but if you are concerned with maintenance or safety you can install a pondless fountain with the reservoir underground.

Bring the Lure of Tuscany HomeThe Peppermill Resort Spa Casino boasts one of the grandest pools in Reno. Designed to mentally transport guests to a grand Tuscan villa, the pool has many luxuries. A mermaid fountain rises up from one end, while mosaic tiles create beautiful designs on the pool’s bottom. Warm earthy colors paired with red chaise lounges help recreate the Italian atmosphere. By selecting similar materials and accents this look could be recreated in your own backyard. Flagstone or the more affordable stamped concrete could be used to get a pool deck that looks similar. Additionally, a smaller bronze fountain could be installed in or near your pool.
