Connect to Tech
In recent years, technology has become a very influential force. We use mobile phones and tablets to do our banking, respond to emails, play games and more. But did you know that technology can be used to automate outdoor living features in your backyard? This Newport Beach landscape is wired to be controlled from an iPad. Louvers on the patio cover can be adjusted at the touch of a button and the water feature and fire pit can be turned on and off remotely.

Go Native
Native plants are well-adapted to the Orange County climate and will thrive on your property. Most California natives will do well with a minimum amount of water, which reduces irrigation expenses. Natives are common for use in xeric landscapes. There is also the added bonus of attracting wildlife such as hummingbirds and butterflies. This Tustin garden features foothill penstemon, monkey flower, and a variety of native sages for long-lasting color.

Please the Sports Fans
If you’re a fanatic when it comes to football season or you can’t miss a baseball game, then an outdoor sports bar like this one may be for you. The owners of this Irvine property wanted to take advantage of Orange County’s pleasant year-round weather and watch their sports outside. They had a cabana built with five televisions and a ticker tape so they’d never miss a play or have to wonder about the score. It is wise to place any outdoor electronics under a solid roof, but outdoor TVs can be purchased that are weather-proof and have reduced glare.

Create Drama
Orange County has inspired two hit television series, The O.C. and Arrested Development. Why not add a little of that O.C. drama to your own property? This Mediterranean-inspired backyard features a large fountain that serves as a focal point both day and night. Flowers around the fountain’s basin kick it up a notch, while jets shoot out arcs of water lit by lights from below. The backyard also features a swimming pool and pool house, making it the ultimate space for outdoor living.

Make the Most of a Small Yard
If you live in one of Orange County’s newer planned communities, it’s likely you have a small yard. The owner of this San Clemente backyard didn’t let that stop her. She wanted an outdoor space with Spanish-flair and all the bells and whistles for outdoor entertaining. With the help of a landscape architect, the small yard was transformed to include a pool, water features, a built-in grill and outdoor dining space as well as a gas fireplace. White stucco walls, cobalt blue tiles and terracotta paving give this backyard the Spanish style requested.

Use Built-In Seating to Maximize Space
Installing permanent seating is another popular small space strategy used by Orange County landscapers. Built-in seating also gives outdoor living spaces a high-end feel. A bench with a backrest borders this backyard dining area in Fullerton. On either end of the bench are large boulders, while flagstone creates a warm, natural look for the bench itself. A few toss soften the stone and make the seating area more inviting. Flagstone spills over onto the concrete patio to integrate the bench with the rest of the space.
