Sunset Dream Garden Award Winners
Congratulations to 2011's award-winning garden designs
We'd like to congratulate the five companies that received recognition as winners of the Dream Garden Awards in the April issue of Sunset. The magazine runs an annual contest that celebrates outstanding garden design. This year entries were judged in five categories, below are the winners for each:
Outdoor Living & Entertaining Shades of Green Landscape Architecture - Sausalito, CA
Front Yard Living
This garden turned an unruly sloped front yard into an outdoor living space that the whole family can enjoy. Check out our video tour of this award-winning front-yard remodel, featuring its designer Ive Haugeland.
Regional Gardens Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture - Los Osos, CA
The Wild Look
Local boulders and ornamental grasses give this winery estate a Mediterranean feel. The property features a swimming pool, fire pit and raised garden beds for growing vegetables. Check out this slideshow for more raised vegetable garden inspiration.
Small Gardens Arterra Landscape Architects - San Francisco, CA
Geometric Flair
Bands of stone paving set on a diagonal make this small urban backyard feel larger, while soft grasses add texture and movement. Get tips on how to maximize your small yard.
Sustainable Gardens Grace Design Associates - Santa Barbara, CA
Eco Chic
Ninety-five percent of the materials used for this project were locally sourced or salvaged. Over 200 tons of stone were reused to create seating, walls and borders. Drought-tolerant grasses were planted because they are eye-catching, low maintenance and use little water. Projects like this one are often eligible for sustainable landscaping rebates.
Garden Renovations Henning-Anderson - Oakland, CA
Fireproofed & Lawnless
This home's existing garden was uninspired and had a water-intensive lawn. It was reinvented with a modern, geometric patio made of bluestone pavers and crushed rock. Now the homeowners can enjoy dining al fresco and drinking a glass of wine next to their custom fire pit. If your yard needs reinventing check out our backyard makeover ideas.
